This series of shorts is for a television network called Adult Swim, as the television network airs typically unusual TV shows like Metalocalypse and Superjail, i feel that these animations would fit well on the network as short advertisements/promos in between different shows, because they feel fresh and unique to anything that you would usually see on television.
I think Hardcastle thought hard about how much content could fit into these shorts and how he wanted the audience to react to each animation, e.g make them laugh, have a passive response, lighten the mood, etc.
Hardcastle makes good use the combination of lighting and camera angles/shot framing in these animations, it adds drama and depth to the animation which is hard to do in such a short space of time.
Some of these shorts have within them dark humour, slapstick and gore elements, which when looking at other works by Hardcastle is a common theme, and I think that this again is appropriate for its purpose in promoting the Adult Swim television network, as the shock factor and uniqueness is something that i think the network would pride itself on broadcasting.
These shorts feature very crisp sound design that really adds to the believability and professionalism of the animations. There is a subtlety in both sound and image that makes these himations very expressive and understandable. I would say that some of these shorts have good potential to be more than what they were purposed for - for example the first shortt, i feel would make for entertaining viewing as a series of short narratives.
